BMU PARTICIPATES IN THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY, NEW YORK, USA. Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, Vice Chancellor BMU, presents a paper at the UN titled “Raising a Case for Oncology Services Against Cancer Upsurge in the Niger Delta Region” Professor Ebitimitula N. Etebu, Vice Chancellor of the Bayelsa Medical University(BMU) has lauded the efforts of HE Governor Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State and the State Government for the establishment of the Goldcoast Dickson Memorial Cancer Centre (GDMCC) in Toru-Orua, Bayelsa State, in the heart of the Niger Delta. In his presentation, the Vice Chancellor said named after the mother of the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, who succumbed to cancer, the GDMCC will fill gaps in preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and supportive care. Professor Etebu highlighted the fact that Cancers are a major contributor to non-communicable disease morbidity and mortality worldwide. There has been a continued annual rise in the incidence of cancers, from an estimated 14 million new cases and 8.2 million deaths in 2012 to 8.8 million deaths in 2015. The Vice Chancellor was represented at the United Nations Assembly by Teibowei Marie Therese, Public Relations Officer Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa. Other activities on the agenda were an ACADEMIC TOUR to the Jerome green hall, Columbia law school, in New York; an academic event at the Southern Boulevard, Bronx, New York City gardens titled Artists inspiring Action event; an African Union Ecosocc Clusters Aspiration 5. Goal 16 of the AU Agenda 2063 at the Hutchinson river parkway East, Bronx; a meeting with Mr. Ben Okoyen, Nigerian Consular in NY. Nigerian House, USA; a Meeting at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts; a Meeting at the Boston Medical Centre (BMC) a 514-bed Academic Medical Centre and a Meeting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA, USA.
