GOVERNOR DICKSON APPOINTS AN 11-MAN GOVERNING COUNCIL OF THE BAYELSA MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, YENAGOA, SWEARS IN PROF. NIMI BRIGGS DIMKPA AS PRO-CHANCELLOR AND CHAIRMAN

The Executive Governor of Bayelsa State Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson has appointed Prof. Nimi Briggs as the new Chairman of Governing Council and Pro-Chancellor of the Bayelsa Medical University Yenagoa. Prof. Nimi Dimkpa Briggs who was born on the 22ND of February 1944 is a Nigerian academic, scholar and Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He served as the Vice-Chancellor of University of Port Harcourt twice. First, as Acting Vice-Chancellor from 1995 to 96 before he was appointed again in 2000 serving until 2005. He is the former Chairman Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and the Chairman of the Board of the National Hospital. Between 2007 and 2008, he was appointed Chairman of the Rivers State Economic Advisory Council and the Rivers State Community Foundation as well as, Director of Centre for Health and Development, University of Port Harcourt. Other positions held at the University of Port Harcourt include: Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology: 1980 – 1993; Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology: 1990; Provost of College of Health Sciences: 1993 - 1995, 1996 – 1998; Chairman Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission: 2007 – 2011; Chairman, Board of Management University of Benin Teaching Hospital: 2009 – 2011; The other members of the Governing Council include: Ambassador (Dr.) Godknows Boladei Igali Professor Tarila Tebepah; Hon. Jonathan Obuebite; Dr. Aziba-Aloaguo Seibofa; Chief (Prof.) Rose Ebieroba Ezonbodor-Akwagbe; Dr. Folabi Ogunlesi; Dr. Herbert Oye; Pharmacologist (Mrs.) Tuate L. Alagoa Nene; The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance; the representative of the National University Commission. Governor Dickson speaking at the inauguration in the Executive chambers of the Governor’s office, charged the council to use their wealth of experience and global network to help build a strong Bayelsa Medical University in order to launch it to an enviable position among specialized tertiary institutions in the country. The Governor described the BMU as a the second public specisalized Medical University in the country, the first in the Ijaw Nation and having recently obtained approval by the National University Commission (NUC). According to Governor Dickson, the economic downturn in the country nation calls for institutions to become self-sustaining as practiced all over the world. His words:” I expect you to work with the government to move the institution towards more sustainable means of funding. Work to see how the institution will become the center for development which will create and attract funds for the running of the University.” The Governor used the occasion to announce a monthly subvention of N50 Million and N25 million for expatriates that will be spent by government every month”. Responding, the Chairman of the governing board, Prof. Nimi Briggs, while commending the governor for appointing him and other members of the board said, the task ahead of them was enormous but expressed confidence and optimism in their collective ability to make the Niger Delta University a globally competitive institution of learning.
