The Visitor to the Bayelsa Medical University and Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, has reiterated his commitment to support the University to commence academic activities in June 2019. The Visitor also pledged his resolve to make the Bayelsa Medical University Teaching Hospital commence medical services to the public by December 2019. The Governor stated these while deliberating on issues pertaining to the development of BMU when he attended the 3rd Governing Council meeting of the University held on Wednesday 19th June 2019 in the Council Chambers of the University. During the meeting, the Governing Council of BMU deliberated on a number of critical issues pertaining to the promotion, advancement and development of institution and commencement of academic activities in the University. The meeting was presided over by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Professor Emeritus Nimi D. Briggs. The Chairman of Council emphasized the need for BMU to acquire the manpower with the necessary capacity, knowledge, information, skills, capabilities and competence to transform BMU. Other members of the Governing Council present at the meeting were Professor Ebitimitula Etebu (Ag. Vice Chancellor of BMU), Ambassador (Dr.) Godknows Boladei Igali, Professor Tarilah Tebepah, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite (Commissioner for Education), Dr. Aziba-Aloaguo Seibofa, Chief (Prof.) Rose Ebieroba Ezonbodor-Akwagbe, Mrs. Tuate L. Alagoa-Nene, Mr. Felix Soroh (Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance) and Dr. Herbert Oye (who joined the meeting through Skype from the US) while Dr. Akpoebi Adesi (Ag. Registrar of BMU) served as Secretary. The Visitor to the University and Governor of Bayelsa State Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson later undertook a tour of Bayelsa Medical University where he met with the newly appointed Lecturers specifically recruited to teach in the Pre-medical and Science Foundation programme of the institution. The Lecturers were in a 4-day Workshop on “Curriculum Design, Implementation and Assessment” organised by the Academic Planning Unit of the University when the Governor visited them. The Management of BMU under the leadership of the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebitimitla Etebu held a meeting on Thursday 20th June 2019 to review all resolutions of Governing Council taken at its 3rd Meeting and to strategise on ways of implementing the decisions. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu who presented an overview of activities of the University said the success so far has been largely due to the determination of the Management team of professionals selected from the from sister Universities in the State to build a strong foundation. The Ag. Vice Chancellor said he was resolved to actualize the vision of HE the Governor in Medical education in Bayelsa State.
