About Anatomical Pathology

The Department of Anatomical Pathology at Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) is dedicated to the study of disease mechanisms and the structural changes that occur in organs and tissues. The department plays a vital role in medical education, clinical diagnosis, and research, serving as a bridge between the basic and clinical sciences.

The department offers comprehensive training to medical and paramedical students through lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and case-based learning. The curriculum is divided into two major segments: General Pathology and Systemic Pathology.

General Pathology introduces students to the fundamental mechanisms of disease, including cellular injury, inflammation, repair, immunopathology, neoplasia, genetic, environmental, and infectious diseases.

Systemic Pathology focuses on disease processes affecting specific organ systems such as the respiratory, cardiovascular, genitourinary, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and lymphoreticular systems. It also includes an introduction to forensic pathology and medico-legal practices.

In addition to teaching, the department provides diagnostic histopathology, cytopathology, and autopsy services to support clinical management and research. Faculty members are actively involved in research on local and global disease patterns, contributing to improved healthcare delivery and scientific advancement.
