About the Bayelsa Medical University

BMU is a specialised medical university established to raise crops of professionally competent personnel in the multi-disciplinary study of medicine and allied medical sciences that are capable of identifying health needs and challenges of society and proffering solutions to such issues for the well-being of mankind.

Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) was established in 2019 by the Bayelsa State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, as part of a strategic vision to address critical healthcare manpower shortages in the Niger Delta region and Nigeria at large. The institution was conceived to be a world-class, technology-driven medical university that would produce highly skilled doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to improve healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Founding and Early Development (2019–2021)

  • Inception (2018): BMU was established via the Bayelsa Medical University Law enacted by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. It began with two pioneer faculties: Basic Medical Sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry) and Clinical Sciences (MBBS programme).

  • First Vice-Chancellor: Prof. Ebitimitula Nicholas Etebu, a renowned professor of Pathology, was appointed as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor to oversee the university’s development.

  • NUC Accreditation (2019): BMU secured full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for its MBBS programme, ensuring its graduates would be recognized nationally and internationally.

Expansion and Growth (2021–Present)

  • New Faculties Added: The university expanded to include:

    • Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.Pharm)

    • Faculty of Dentistry (BDS)

    • Faculty of Health Sciences (Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health)

    • Faculty of Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics)

  • Permanent Campus Development: Construction accelerated on the main campus along Imgbi Road, featuring:

    • A 500-bed Teaching Hospital

    • VR/AR-equipped medical simulation labs

    • Modern lecture halls, research centers, and student hostels

  • Strategic Partnerships: BMU collaborated with institutions like:

    • Federal Medical Centre - Yenagoa (FMC-YEN)

    • Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri

    • International partners for exchange programmes (in progress)

Present-Day BMU (2024 and Beyond)

Today, BMU is one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing medical universities, known for:

✔ Strong Clinical Exposure (early patient interaction from Year 3)
✔ Research Focus (tropical diseases, public health, and medical innovation)
