Medical Laboratory Science

About the Program

In order to bridge diagnostic science with patient care, you will develop comprehensive competencies in laboratory medicine, biomedical research, and healthcare technology. A particular focus of the program is on mastering both fundamental laboratory techniques and advanced diagnostic technologies through hands-on training in our state-of-the-art labs.

The Professional B.MLS degree program lasts 5 years for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination entry candidates and 4 years for direct entry candidates, or as may be prescribed by the appropriate authority from time to time. A student on a 5-year degree program shall normally be expected to complete the program in ten semesters but may be allowed to continue for a total of 14 semesters and still qualify for a classified degree provided he/she maintains a CGPA of 1.50 and above and did not fail more than 50% of the total number of courses registered in any one session.

For the 4-year Direct Entry program, the maximum number of years is 6 years, while for the 5-year program, the maximum number of years is 7 years, after which the student is deemed to have withdrawn for academic failure.

The curriculum includes specialized rotations across all major laboratory disciplines, allowing you to develop individualized expertise in areas like molecular diagnostics, forensic science, or public health laboratory management. Upon graduation, you will be equipped to perform, interpret, and supervise medical laboratory tests that are crucial for disease diagnosis and treatment monitoring.

Beyond classroom learning, you will train extensively in our fully equipped teaching laboratories and complete clinical placements in partner hospitals, gaining vital real-world experience with modern laboratory equipment and information systems.

Program Objectives:
Our mission is to educate competent, innovative medical laboratory scientists prepared to excel in modern healthcare systems. You will develop the ability to:

  • Perform and interpret complex diagnostic tests accurately

  • Implement quality control and assurance protocols

  • Utilize cutting-edge laboratory technologies effectively

  • Conduct biomedical research that improves patient outcomes

Graduates will emerge with:

  • Mastery of core medical laboratory competencies

  • Proficiency in laboratory informatics and automation

  • Clinical experience from diverse diagnostic settings

  • Research skills for evidence-based laboratory practice

This prepares you for careers in hospital laboratories, research institutions, public health agencies, and diagnostic companies – equipped to deliver precise diagnostics while advancing laboratory medicine in Nigeria and beyond.

Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (NUC-CCMAS) for the education and training of undergraduate students wishing to obtain first degrees in Medical Laboratory Science in Nigeria.

Admission Criteria

Admission by Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Admission into the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science is normally through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Candidates must satisfy both the University, the Faculty/Departmental and MLSCN requirements.

A.1 University Requirements

Admission through Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

The minimum admission requirements for first year of a Bachelor’s Degree Programmed shall be five (5) subjects (including English Language and Mathematics) obtained at the credit level at the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level, West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE), Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), National Exanimation Council (NECO), National Business and Technical Education Board (NABTEB), or their equivalents, in not more than two (2) sittings. The other subjects shall be as indicated in section B.1.  Such candidates shall be admitted into year one (1) of the degree programme.

In addition, Faculty and Departmental requirements(s) shall be satisfied, concerning O-level/UTME subject combinations. Furthermore, students must obtain:

An acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), not below the national minimum cut-off point for universities for the year in question.

An acceptable weighted average score from the JAMB and the University screening exercise, as determined by the University every year.

An acceptable score in the University Pre-Degree Program plus the JAMB minimum cut-off point for universities for the particular year in question.

A.2 Direct Entry Requirement

(a) Admission to Year II of the Degree Programme

Holders of Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certificate with PASS GRADE from Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria that graduated from colleges of health or school of health are eligible for admission to Year II, provided that such candidates also satisfy the requirements for admission through UTME.

Graduates with at least a 2nd class lower degree in allied subjects (Microbiology, Zoology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology and other Medical Science Courses) with a minimum of credit passes in English Language and relevant entry requirements of UTME.

 Faculty/Departmental Requirements

 Admission through UTME

(I) Minimum of Credit level passes at the SSCE/NECO/GCE O'Level Examinations in a minimum of five subjects, including:

  1. Mathematics

  2. English Language

  3. and Physics. The other subjects shall include

  4. Chemistry,

  5. Biology and other relevant science subjects.

(ii) Equivalent passes at O level in other recognised examinations in Nigeria and elsewhere may be considered by the Department, subject to approval by the University Admissions Committee.

B.2 Admission into Year II of the BMLS Programme

Direct entry requirements are the same as in A.2
