Health Information Management

About the Program

The B.Sc. Health Information Management is a specialized four-year undergraduate program designed to train professionals in the management of health data, health informatics, and medical records systems. The program integrates healthcare, information technology, and management principles to equip students with the skills needed to support effective healthcare delivery through accurate data handling and analysis.

Students will develop competencies in health data collection, coding, classification, storage, retrieval, analysis, and dissemination using modern information systems. Emphasis is placed on ensuring patient data privacy, maintaining information security, and facilitating decision-making in clinical and administrative contexts.

Through hands-on training in electronic health records (EHR), health databases, and hospital information systems, students will be prepared to work in a variety of healthcare settings. Clinical placements, IT lab simulations, and industry internships provide students with practical exposure to real-world health information systems and challenges.

Graduates will be equipped to manage the flow of health information in hospitals, health ministries, research institutions, and insurance organizations, ensuring data-driven healthcare outcomes and effective health system management.

Program Objectives

This program aims to produce skilled professionals capable of ensuring the accuracy, confidentiality, and effective use of health information in a rapidly evolving digital healthcare environment.

  • Apply classification systems (e.g., ICD-10, CPT) for coding diseases and procedures

Curriculum

The curriculum follows the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (NUC-CCMAS) for undergraduate education in Health Information Management in Nigeria. It is structured to develop technical and analytical competencies across the health information lifecycle.

Admission Criteria

UTME Entry (4-Year Programme)
To qualify for admission through UTME, candidates must:

  • Present credits in five (5) O'Level subjects (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB) at not more than two sittings, including:
    • English Language
    • Mathematics
    • Biology
    • Physics
    • Chemistry or Economics
  • Meet all other departmental and faculty requirements

Direct Entry (3-Year Programme)
Candidates may gain admission through:

  • A'Level/JUPEB with a minimum of 10 points in:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Mathematics or Economics
  • OND/HND in Health Information Management, Medical Records, or related health sciences with at least Lower Credit
  • Diploma in Health Information Management from recognized institutions
  • All Direct Entry candidates must also possess the five O'Level credits as specified for UTME entry

Additional Requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least 16 years old by the admission year
  • Medical fitness certification is required upon admission
  • All submitted credentials are subject to verification
