About the Program
The Bachelor of Community Health Science (BCHS) programme is an undergraduate degree programme designed to train students to apply clinical and public health procedures and strategies to meet the health needs of populations at both health facility and community levels. The core professional courses equip students with administrative, clinical, training, and supervisory skills essential for health facilities and their target populations.
The BCHS programme is open to:
- Fresh Students: WAEC/NECO holders and Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEWs).
- Direct Entry Candidates: Registered Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) and Community Health Officers (CHOs) licensed by the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN).
Graduates are trained to:
- Identify, diagnose, and treat common health problems.
- Provide antenatal care and birthing support at the health facility and community levels.
- Immunize all eligible children against vaccine preventable diseases
- Provide initial emergency care at community and health facility levels.
- Refer complicated cases to tertiary health facilities.
The programme includes classroom lectures, clinical posting, field trips, community-based experiences, Continuous Assessments, semester and professional examinations, and a one-year internship at tertiary, Secondary, and primary health care facilities, Health related NGOs etc.

Basic Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, Biology.

Clinical experience:
4 weeks in Primary Health Care Board and Cold Store (First Semester)
6 weeks in Epidemiology Units and Disease surveillance offices (Second Semester)

500 Level
Courses: International Health, PHC Management, Health Economics, Outreach/Referral, Human Resources, Public Health Law, Population Dynamics, Family Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, Community Health Seminars.
Postings: 4 weeks in WHO, NGOs, and NPHCDA. Maternity units at teaching hospital and primary health care facilities.

Admission Criteria
UTME Entry (5-Year Programme)
To qualify for admission through UTME, candidates must:
- Present credits in five (5) O' Level subjects (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB) at not more than two sittings, including:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Biology/Health Science
- Chemistry
- Physics
Direct Entry (4-Year Programme)
Candidates may gain admission through:
- All Direct Entry candidates must also possess the five (5) O' Level credits as specified for UTME entry.
- ND or Higher Diploma in Community Health (CHEW and CHO). Valid CHPRBN license.
- A' Level/JUPEB with a minimum of 10 points in:
- Biology/Health Science
- Chemistry
- Physics/ Mathematics
Additional Requirements:
- Candidates must be at least 16 years old by the admission year
- Medical fitness certification is required upon admission
- All submitted credentials are subject to verification
