The department of Human Anatomy began as a department in 2019 at the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Bayelsa Medical University, with an intake of 91 student in 100 level for the B.Sc Anatomy degree program.

The bachelor’s degree programme in Anatomy (B.Sc Anatomy) in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, is anchored on the philosophy that Anatomy, having remained an untapped 'Basic medical sciences Field in Nigeria, requires a paradigm shift and the development of a robust training to service directed strategies that can expose the students to the service and wealth-creating potentials in the knowledge of Anatomy, based on the cardinal pillars of effective mentoring, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The department of Physiology is one of the foundation Departments in the Faculty of Basic Medical Science of the Bayelsa Medical University. It was established in 2018 to run undergraduate programmes leading to the award of B.Sc degree in Physiology. It also engages in the teaching of basic Physiology to Medical, Human Anatomy, biochemistry, Physiology students.

The department has up-to-the-minute teaching and research laboratory, lecture room, staff offices, seminar/conference room, departmental library and e-library. The Department of Physiology is pioneered by full-time, team-spirited, intellectual, proficient and result-oriented members of Academic and Non-academic staff led by Prof. Ighoroje Ahbor, Dean of Basic Medical Sciences and Dr. Aduema Wadioni who is the Acting Head of Department of Physiology.

The Department of Biochemistry was created in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences to provide a specialized academic pathway for B.Sc Biochemistry and also to provide a focused service to the MBBS/BDS and other allied medical programmes of the Bayelsa Medical University. This is based on the premise that advances in medicine should emphasize interpretative aspects and clinical correlations, reflecting close professional relationship between clinical chemists and practicing clinicians.

In contemporary medical practice, most clinical diagnoses stem from an understanding of the pathological causes. To interpret these pathophysiological processes, it is inevitable to make use of the fundamental principles of Biochemistry that govern their functions within the molecular pathways of human body. A thorough understanding of the biochemical concept not only helps address the key problem in human health and diseases, but also provides clues for the prevention, medical intervention, treatment and management of diseases.
