I stand before you today with profound gratitude to the Almighty, my Creator, for the grace, guidance, and blessings that have led me to this point in my career. I am deeply honored and humbled to step into the role of Vice-Chancellor of Bayelsa Medical University (BMU).

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, for his unwavering support of education and his role in steering BMU toward excellence. Thank you, Your Excellency, for your visionary leadership and for entrusting me with this great responsibility.

To the University Council, chaired by the esteemed Prof. Tarila Tebepah, I extend my deepest thanks. I am committed to working hand-in-hand with you and the Council to fulfill the great potential of this university.

I would also like to take a moment to acknowledge my predecessor and the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of this great institution, Prof. Ebitimitula Nicholas Etebu. Under your leadership, BMU was established and built on strong foundations. Your contributions to the university have set the stage for continued growth and development. I am grateful for the path you have laid, and I pledge to build upon the achievements you have made.

It is a tremendous honor to share with you today my vision for Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) — a vision that aligns with the founding ideals upon which this institution was established. This vision is deeply rooted in our shared goal of transforming BMU into a globally recognized leader in medical education, research, and innovation. Together, through collaboration and collective effort, we will work towards a future where BMU is celebrated for academic excellence, technology-driven initiatives, commitment to sustainability, and a significant global health impact.

1. Academic Excellence
   BMU will implement a rigorous quality assurance system that continuously evaluates and improves academic performance. We will introduce innovative curriculum development, ensuring excellence in teaching and examinations. Through performance management systems, we will foster a culture of continuous improvement.
2. Sustainability
   To ensure BMU's long-term success, we will develop strategies for financial and environmental sustainability. This includes optimizing internal revenue generation through consultancy services, training programs, and entrepreneurship initiatives, while also leveraging external grants and donor funding. For environmental sustainability, we will integrate green technologies such as solar energy, energy-efficient buildings, and waste management systems to reduce operational costs.
3. Partnerships & Engagement
   BMU will actively engage with the local community, partnering with healthcare providers, governments, NGOs, and international organizations to ensure our research, healthcare services, and educational programs meet community health needs. We will work with stakeholders to improve public health outcomes both regionally and across Nigeria.
4. Innovation & Technology
   We will integrate advanced digital tools such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), telemedicine, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the Metaverse to modernize teaching, research, and administration. My vision includes establishing a Digital Healthcare Simulation Lab to allow students and faculty to engage in immersive learning through virtual simulations of medical procedures. Additionally, we will foster a Health Tech Innovation Lab to promote entrepreneurship, attract industry partnerships, and create new revenue streams through the commercialization of healthcare technologies.
5. Research Excellence
   BMU will prioritize increasing research output with a focus on high-impact publications and innovative research that addresses real-world health issues. We will establish mentorship programs, strengthen research capacity, and create Medical Centers of Excellence aligned with our local health priorities. Additionally, a Global Research Incubator and Accelerator Hub will nurture early-stage research ideas, attract international scholars, and elevate BMU’s research profile. A reward system will be introduced to celebrate scholars and researchers who achieve milestones, promoting a culture of inquiry and innovation.
6. Empowerment & Welfare
   A key focus of my leadership will be creating a supportive environment for both students and staff. This includes improving welfare services, providing career development opportunities, and offering mentorship programs that foster personal and professional growth. By instilling a sense of belonging and excellence, we will create a university community that is energized, collaborative, and focused on achieving greatness.

1. Undertake a Familiarization Tour
   I will embark on a comprehensive familiarization tour of the university to engage directly with students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders. This will include listening sessions to gather valuable insights, identify strengths and challenges, and foster open communication across the BMU community.
2. Appraise and Address Accreditation Requirements
   Ensuring that all existing programs meet national and international accreditation standards is a priority. I will establish an Accreditation Task Force to address accreditation gaps in current programs and assess future needs as the university expands.
3. Develop a Comprehensive Strategic Plan
   I will lead the development of a strategic plan informed by data and insights from stakeholders during the familiarization tour. This plan will outline measurable goals and pathways for transforming BMU into a globally recognized leader in medical education and research.
4. Establish a Centers of Excellence Committee
   I will form a committee tasked with recommending and developing Centers of Excellence in key medical fields. Using data-driven decision-making, these centers will focus on specialized research and academic leadership.
5. Organize Leadership and Management Training for Key Stakeholders
   To strengthen governance, I will organize leadership and management training for university administrators, faculty leaders, and key stakeholders. These programs will cover areas such as academic leadership, financial management, and digital transformation.
6. Conduct a Comprehensive Audit of Academic and Research Readiness
   I will initiate an audit to assess BMU’s readiness for achieving academic and research excellence. The audit will cover critical areas like faculty qualifications, infrastructure, and research output, informing both the strategic plan and immediate interventions.
7. Establish a Financial Sustainability and Revenue Generation Committee
   I will create a committee to explore new revenue streams, focusing on consultancy services, entrepreneurial initiatives, and partnerships. This committee will ensure financial sustainability for BMU by diversifying income and minimizing financial risks.
